Following a highly successful first full season as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, Sean McVay has quickly become one of the highly respected offensive minds in the NFL. He has also earned the strong reputation as being a highly impactful coach in regards to the development of quarterbacks.
Among of this year's crop of quarterbacks, Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield stands out as one of the top players at the position that will be available as he has already sought out the advice from McVay. According to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN, McVay has revealed what he has advised Mayfield to do to handle this busy week at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Article Continues Below“We just talked a little bit,” McVay recalled in a phone conversation on Wednesday morning. “I wanted to be careful. I know he's going to be talking all week, and this is kind of an exhausting process both physically and mentally. But just kind of let him know, ‘Just be yourself, enjoy it, be honest and up front,' like he would regardless of whether I said that.”
Mayfield is expected to be one of the first quarterbacks off the board in the first round in this year's NFL Draft after a highly successful collegiate career at Oklahoma. This was capped by an impressive senior campaign where he led the nation’s most productive offense while completing 71 percent of his passes for 4,340 yards and 41 touchdown passes that helped him the 2017 Heisman Trophy award.
The 22-year-old has been highly touted for his accuracy and decision-making in the pocket that has led to many analysts to project that he will have plenty of success at the next level. However, there has been some concern over his sometimes questionable choices when he emotions are running high on the field along with a well-document incident involving law enforcement.
That said, this shows that Mayfield is taking a more serious approach to his pending NFL future with his focus centered on preparing himself in the best manner at the combine and any additional pre-draft workouts.
