The NFL is planning on playing a full 2020 campaign in spite of the current coronavirus pandemic, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

“Our planning, our expectation, is fully directed at playing a full season starting on schedule and having a full regular season and a full set of playoffs,” said NFL executive Jeff Pash. “Am I certain? I’m not certain that I’ll be here tomorrow. But I’m planning on it.”

Pash also said that the NFL is focused on starting on time and playing in front of fans, per Pelissero.

Pelissero added that the league expects to release its schedule no later than May 9.

As of right now, the NFL is the only major sports league in America that has been unaffected by the coronavirus. The NBA and NHL have both suspended their seasons indefinitely, and the MLB has pushed its season opener back without specifying a start date. Also, the NCAA canceled the NCAA Tournament, and the XFL canceled the remainder of its season.

While the NFL may have some difficulty getting organized team activities together in May, mandatory training camp does not open until July, and the preseason does not begin until August.

Taking it a step further, the regular season does not kick off until September, which certainly gives the NFL more breathing room than the other sports.

It's also important to keep in mind that the NFL Draft is next month, so if there is one football event that could potentially feel the effects of COVID-19, it's that.

As of right now, the league seems prepared to proceed, although whether or not fans are allowed to attend the event remains to be seen.
