Green Bay Packers rookie running back Aaron Jones recently made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Six days before his first National Football League start, he was arrested for charges of speeding, driving without a valid license and operating a vehicle with a controlled substance in his system.

He has since pleaded not guilty.

While he hasn't gone in-depth with what actually happened, Aaron Jones has released a statement:

“I owe an apology to my family, teammates, coaches, the fans and the Packers organization,” Jones said, via Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “I made a mistake, and I take full responsibility for it, and it won’t happen again. I can’t speak on it because it’s an ongoing legal matter.”

In terms of football, Jones has been a solid player for the Packers this season. He has rushed for 370 yards and three touchdowns on 70 carries during his first pro campaign.

Obviously, it is weird that he's pleading not guilty, but has offered an apology at the same time. While it is probably just a move to help with some optics, people who have usually been “not guilty” don't feel the need to issue an apology.

For clarification purposes, Jones was arrested back on October 2.

Nevertheless, this is mostly a legal matter that might have football repercussions. Until the legal system is done with the player, we would only be discussing this in terms of conjecture, as we don't yet have enough information to make any fully formed educated guesses.
