The Philadelphia Eagles are going through the motions of the 2022 NFL Offseason along with the rest of the league. Representatives from the team, including head coach Nick Sirianni and GM Howie Roseman, attended the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine. Now, they are preparing for the 2022 NFL Draft and working on contracts for next season.
12 Philadelphia players are free agents this offseason, including running back Boston Scott and linebacker Alex Singleton. While decisions must be made regarding these 12 players, the Eagles need to stay focused when it comes to free agents from other organizations. They have plenty of cap space to work with and could potentially sign decent, proven talent from another club. Here are the two free agents that the Birds must avoid this offseason.
The 2022 Free Agents the Eagles Must Avoid
Odell Beckham Jr. is one of the most talked-about free agency names circulating offseason discussions. The wide receiver was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the conclusion of the 2021-2022 season due to his early exit in Week 17.
His late-season antics are just one drop in the bucket of baggage that Beckham carries with him this offseason. His talent on the field is plentiful, but it's not enough to cancel out the off-field obstacles he could bring to the Eagles.
However, the Eagles should be focusing their attention on a veteran wide receiver in the Free Agency period, just not Odell. Many other free agents would bring all of the same productivity to the Eagles that Beckham would, without any of the deal-breaking baggage.
In fact, this is something that promising young receiver DeVonta Smith talked about in a discussion with Philadelphia sports reporter John Clark.
“I feel like it would help…Somebody that’s already been there. I know it would help for me, just being under their wing, how they operate, how they are as a pro,” Smith said, quote courtesy of Eagles Wire.
Jameis Winston (or any other quarterback, really)
The past week has been insane for quarterbacks in the NFL. The Green Bay Packers finalized a giant deal with Aaron Rodgers. Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos and the Indianapolis Colts traded Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders. Now, there aren't many solid quarterbacks up for grabs.
Jameis Winston is probably the most talented quarterback left in free agency. He only played in six full games last season before he suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Week 8.
At this point, the 28-year-old is deep into his recovery process and is already advertising himself through social media. He has become known for his bizarre offseason workout drills that his team posts on social media. There is also a video of him running on a treadmill from late February, which is important to see following an ACL tear.
Not only should the Eagles steer clear of Winston, but the team should avoid signing any free agency quarterbacks. Philadelphia is infamous for quarterback controversies, which is the last thing this team needs right now.
Nick Sirianni and Howie Roseman have said multiple times that the Eagles are sticking with Hurts, but actions speak louder than words. Hopefully, Philadelphia sticks with this decision and sees it through.
