The Philadelphia Eagles are flying high with the team still living it up after their Super Bowl win over Tom Brady's New England Patriots. Although the team is enjoying being the league's best during the offseason and that they should, there's plenty of speculation and concern moving forward about the quarterback position.
MVP candidate Carson Wentz went down with a season-ending knee injury which resulted in the Eagles having to count on Nick Foles to shoulder the load. Foles greatly increased his value by leading the team to a title while earning Super Bowl MVP honors, but he won't be the starter next season nor does it appear he'll be filling in for Wentz early on, via Peter King of MMQB.
Article Continues BelowThe Eagles continue to be confident that Carson Wentz will be healthy enough after Dec. 13 knee surgery to play the Sept. 6 NFL opener, and have had at least one respectable (the word I hear to describe it) trade offer for Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles … The Eagles got first- and fourth-round picks for Sam Bradford 17 months ago and feel Foles is better, so it’ll likely take at least that to pique their interest, and that’s likely not happening … Philly expects to lose defensive tackle Beau Allen, linebacker Nigel Bradham and tight end Trey Burton in free agency. The Eagles want Chris Long back, and Long intends to play another year in Philly.
There's no question that Wentz being expected to be healthy enough to be the team's Week 1 starter is good news for the Eagles. When healthy, Wentz is among the league's elite at the quarterback position and may have a very bright future ahead of him.
Foles, however, is a formidable backup as he proved his worth during the team's impressive run at a title. If Wentz isn't on track for Week 1, it wouldn't be all that surprising for Doug Pederson and company to go with the veteran backup to begin the season if they don't decide to trade him at some point during the offseason.
Needless to say, the defending Super Bowl champions will be in a good position to start the 2018 NFL campaign if all goes according to plan.
