According to an official statement released by the franchise earlier in the day on Tuesday, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed free agent tight end Richard Rodgers. Leading to Rodgers' return to Philadelphia on Tuesday evening, the veteran tight end was previously waived by the rival Washington Football Team, which eventually allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent ahead of Week 1 of the 2020-21 regular season.

Ironically enough, Philadelphia and Washington will be squaring off against one another come Week 1 this upcoming weekend as Rodgers could play a useful role for the Eagles as the team continues to prepare for an unprecedented season unlike any other.

The 28-year-old Rodgers will now serve as the Eagles' third-storing tight end upon making his way back to the NFC East franchise. The veteran tight end notably spent the past two seasons in Philadelphia despite the fact that he only appeared in eight games for the team. Rodgers was on injured reserve for part of the 2018-19 campaign before then finding himself unemployed for three months last season. Rodgers has tallied only one catch for seven yards as a member of the Eagles as it stands today.

Prior to his eventual arrival in Philadelphia a few seasons back, Rodgers spent his first four seasons as a member of the Green Bay Packers after the NFC North franchise originally selected him in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Cal. Rodgers has posted 121 catches for 1,173 yards and 13 touchdowns in his six seasons atop the highest level.
