The Pittsburgh Steelers and running back Le'Veon Bell have failed to come to terms on a long-term deal once again. As a result, the latest stalled negotiations could have some serious repercussions following the 2018 NFL season.
Bell has expressed his desire to retire as a Steeler. Unfortunately, his agent Adisa Bakari says he has changed his mind after being slapped with a second consecutive franchise tag, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter:
“His intention was to retire as a Steeler. But now that there's no deal, the practical reality is, this now likely will [be] Le'Veon's last season as a Steeler.”
More: “It became clear the Steelers wanted to pay the position, not the player.”
The update was the last thing Steelers fans wanted to hear amidst the latest failed contract negotiations. The franchise gave good reason to believe that they would be able to come to terms on a new deal. Even head coach Mike Tomlin was adamant about some “good news” being on the way. However, it seems the relationship between Bell and the Steelers has been damaged beyond repair.
The three-time Pro Bowler has made it clear for some time now that he intends to be not just the highest-paid running back in the league, but one of its most lucrative offensive players as well. He had certainly done enough to warrant such a contract after establishing himself as an elite-level player.
However, it appears Pittsburgh would rather pay him for the position he plays rather than his actual impact on the team. It goes without saying that the Steelers rely on Bell much more than the average team does their running backs. Unfortunately, it sounds like he is ready to let another team pay him what he feels his worth is.
