After failing to suit up in Week 1, the Oakland Raiders’ first-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft in Gareon Conley is all set to make his professional debut at home against the New York Jets this Sunday. This is according to ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez, who also notes of Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio’s excitement of the rookie.

Oakland Raiders first-round draft pick Gareon Conley, who missed all of training camp with a right shin injury, will make his NFL debut on Sunday against the New York Jets.

“He had a good week of practice, so yeah, we're going to have Gareon up,” Raiders coach Jack Del Rio said Friday of the rookie cornerback.

The need for help in the secondary was big for the Raiders in the offseason. While the team’s offense flourished last year, it’s defense was wrecked on an almost weekly basis on the air, as Oakland finished the 2016-17 season with the seventh-most passing yards allowed per game (375.1). With that, it just seemed appropriate for the Raiders to spend an early pick in the draft on a secondary piece, and they are hoping Conley would eventually pay off their investment in him.

Conley missed Week 1 due to some troubles with his shin but has progressed enough to warrant some playing time against New York.

Conley played three seasons for the Ohio State Buckeyes, finishing his college career in 2016 with totals of six interceptions and 91 tackles.
