Oakland Raiders defensive end Khalil Mack made headlines with his decision to no-show the first day of the team’s offseason workout program. The lack of progress in terms of getting his contract extension sorted out was likely a significant factor in his absence.

However, the Raiders don’t appear to be too concerned with Mack missing the first day of OTAs. Moreover, the team is confident it can come to terms on a deal with Mack before the start of training camp, as the NFL Network’s Jim Trotter reports.

Khalil Mack did not attend the start of Raiders voluntary workouts today, but there is no sense of panic within the organization. Mack is in the final year of his rookie contract, and the expectation internally is that an extension will be done before the start of training camp.

A report recently came out which said the Raiders and Mack were far apart in initial talks on an extension. Apparently, the Raiders remain confident in their ability to work out a deal with their defensive star despite that supposedly significant gap.

Mack is pretty far and away the Raiders’ best and most important defensive player and the sooner they can lock him up long-term, the better. They still have time on their side to follow through on that internal expectation to get a deal done by training camp, which is in July. But regardless of when they get it done, what matters is that they actually do succeed in locking Mack up this offseason.
