The New Orleans Saints are inching their way closer to their first playoff berth in four years following a 31-21 win over the Carolina Panthers.
A major part of the Saints' success this season has been the emergence of rookie running back Alvin Kamara into a prominent role within the offense. According to Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk, Kamara has put himself in exclusive company in NFL history.
With 126 yards from scrimmage yesterday, Kamara now has 606 rushing yards and 616 receiving yards for the season. He’s just the third rookie running back to top 600 yards in each category in league history, joining Washington’s Charley Taylor in 1964 and Detroit’s Billy Sims in 1980. And he has four games left.
The 22-year-old has excelled dramatically in a dual-threat role in both the running and passing game. He already garnered 606 rushing yards on just 86 carries with seven touchdowns while hauling in 59 catches for 614 receiving yards and four touchdowns. He has also scored a touchdown in six straight games while toppling over 100 yards from scrimmage in the last five consecutive contests.
Kamara is a uniquely talented running back that has fit perfectly within the Saints offense as one of Drew Brees favorite targets in the passing game. His play has also been quite beneficiary to Mark Ingram, who is nearing his second straight and overall 1,000 rushing yard campaign of his career.
Beyond being a serious candidate to earn the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, he has helped make the Saints into a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
