The 49ers selected Hurd in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft as part of their initiative to shore up some firepower int he receiving corps. He showed plenty of promise early on after hauling in three catches for 31 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason opener. Unfortunately, he logged in only eight snaps the following game before he was sidelined.
Hurd is not the only wideout dealing with injury. San Francisco is also expecting wide receiver Trent Taylor to miss the season opener with a foot injury. As a result, they could be forced to carry a deep batch of receivers on their 53-man roster this weekend.
Fortunately, Shanahan's comments indicate that Hurd's injury is not deemed to be too severe. the 49ers will likely take a cautious approach with his health to start the year in order to ensure his status for the rest of the season.
