The quarterback picture in San Francisco became a bit more clear on Tuesday based off of a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Rapoport stated that Jimmy Garoppolo plans to rehab away from the 49ers offseason camp. He is rehabbing his shoulder which he had surgery on following the season. This news obviously bodes well for Trey Lance, but his starting position is not yet set in stone.

The fact is that Jimmy Garoppolo is still a member of the 49ers. Whether he rehabs with the team or away from the team doesn't matter in that regard. So until San Francisco trades Garoppolo, he is still going to be in the conversation for starting QB next season. Rapoport broke down a scenario that could lead to Jimmy G remaining ahead of Trey Lance on the depth chart.

“What if Jimmy garoppolo just doesn't get traded? What if he is not able to throw until mid-August? What if he's not able to throw full strength by then? What if nobody trades for him and his big contract? Do the 49ers just keep him? What if he's the best quarterback? There is so many different options here for the 49ers. But there is a scenario where he comes and just takes back his starting job.”

That is a possibility. However, the 49ers seem to be interested in giving Lance an opportunity. They know what they have in Garoppolo. But the upside of Lance makes him the more intriguing option.

Jimmy Garoppolo rehabbing away from the 49ers automatically places Trey Lance in the driver's seat as well.
