Jimmy Garoppolo's future has been the subject of a plethora of rumors during the offseason. The veteran quarterback was originally expected to be traded. But now his future is unclear after having shoulder surgery. There was a certain rumor going around that Jimmy G could be traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The speculation was that Garoppolo could backup Tom Brady until Brady retired… if that actually ever happens. And Garoppolo would take over QB1 duties in the future.
But the rumor has no juice to it.
Jimmy Garoppolo's agent shutdown the Jimmy G to the Bucs narrative, per NBC's Pro Football Talk. His agent, Don Yee, also commented on Garoppolo's health following his offseason surgery.
“He’s progressing well and on schedule,” Yee said. “We’re optimistic about the upcoming season. Over the weekend, a report came out that asserted that I had spoken to a media member about his future, but the report was false.”
The report always seemed a bit odd. Many questioned why the Buccaneers would be willing to pay Garoppolo's large salary as a backup for Tom Brady. But rumors tend to pickup steam in the offseason. And that is exactly what happened in this scenario.
If a trade is going to happen, it will be soon. Jimmy Garoppolo is still on the 49ers and we are in mid-July. San Francisco will need to make a decision quickly. Jimmy G is the final standout QB on the trade market, as Baker Mayfield was recently dealt to the Carolina Panthers.
Will Garoppolo be traded? Possibly, but not to the Bucs according to his agent.
