The San Francisco 49ers are off to a rough start out of the gate to the 2018 season dropping four out of the five games that have put them in a bit of an early rut.

This saw starting running back Matt Brieda suffer an ankle injury that drew some concern from the team about the severity of it. The MRI on Brieda's ankle came back to reveal that he had suffered a mid-ankle sprain.

“Matt Breida, as reported earlier, has a mid-ankle sprain, not a high-ankle sprain. But he is still likely to be doubtful for next Monday’s game in Green Bay,” per Matt Maiocco of NBS Sports Bay Area.

The 49ers dodged a major bullet as it could have been a much worse diagnosis for Brieda that could have sidelined him for a significant chunk of time. Instead, he may just miss this week's game next Monday night against the Green Bay Packers in order to provide him with rest as a precautionary approach.

Brieda has been a pleasant surprise for the 49ers after offseason addition Jerick McKinnon suffered a torn ACL as he has stepped up in the starting role. He currently ranks fifth in the NFL with 369 rushing yards on 49 attempts with a touchdown along with 90 receiving yards on 11 receptions and a touchdown. This has included Brieda posting a 100 rushing yard performance along with being eighth in the league with 73.8 yards per game.

If Brieda is to miss any playing time, the 49ers could turn to back up Alfred Morris to take ahold of the starting role. He has 228 rushing yards on 62 attempts with a touchdown. He has proven throughout his career that he can provide consistent production in the starting role along with having comfort playing in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offensive system that he played with the Washington Redskins.
