The San Francisco 49ers are activating 28-year-old defensive back Jimmie Ward from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Tuesday, via Josh Alper of NBC Sports ProFootballTalk.

Ward, entering his sixth season in the NFL—all with San Francisco—broke his collarbone over the offseason in a program with the 49ers. The secondary piece for the Bay Area franchise had re-signed with the team in March of this year to a reported $4.5 million deal for one season.

The Niners selected the 5-foot-11 Ward out of Northern Illinois with the 30th pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The then-23-year-old only appeared in eight games in his rookie season with the 49ers, injuring his foot in Week 9's matchup with the New Orleans Saints.

Furthermore, Ward missed time over the last few seasons, too, only appearing in 16 combined games in the last two years. Ward recorded 54 combined tackles, four tackles for losses, one interception, and one quarterback hit in his sophomore year in the NFL where he played in all 16 games.

Last season, however, before being sidelined with a broken forearm, Ward played in nine games, making 24 combined tackles after the cornerback switched to No. 20.

The Niners have swapped Ward around in their secondary, finding snaps for the defensive back at safety and cornerback during his five-year tenure with the franchise. Despite re-signing Ward earlier in the year, the team is looking for a big training camp from the DB and a healthy season in the fall to end doubts that the former first-round pick is a viable option for the future.
