Another year means another attempt for the San Francisco 49ers to get over the hump and win the Super Bowl. A big factor in making sure that they are close to that goal is keeping players on the roster on their toes. They have to churn out performances that are more than serviceable such that Coach Kyle Shanahan entrusts them a spot in the 53-man rotation. A position where they might be doing this the most is the tight end spot. While they may already have George Kittle, a new NFL Free Agency acquisition came in and he goes by the name of Logan Thomas.

Someone finds a new home through NFL Free Agency

You heard and read that right! Logan Thomas is headed to the 49ers as a tight end, per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. The former quarterback has fully transitioned himself as a serviceable blocker and pass catcher over the few years. He will now have to prove himself to score a permanent rotation spot in Coach Kyle Shanahan's 49ers system.

But, being George Kittle's backup might not be that hard if he only got better. Before getting picked up during NFL Free Agency, Logan Thomas racked in big numbers for the Washington Commanders. He had a 70.5% catch percentage and managed to bring down 55 receptions. That helped him notch 496 receiving yards with an average gain of nine yards per reception. If Brock Purdy needs to go into inches or a first down, this tight end can surely do the job.

Moreover, his playmaking in the endzone has gotten more elite over the past year. After he just notched a single touchdown in 2022, Logan Thomas came back with a vengeance and scored four of them. Another valuable skill he brings to the Kyle Shanahan-led 49ers is his veteran acumen. While there are a lot of prospective oldheads on the 49ers system, no one scouts the field like this recent NFL Free Agency acquisition. He knows which runs opposing defenses are playing and can adapt to create space through blocking for them. His six-foot, six-inch frame with 250 pounds of pure muscle are also going to help him a lot.

Thomas comes in at the right time for the 49ers. Cameron Latu is heading into the season with a massive knee injury which kept him out from last season. Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner also both chose to head into NFL Free Agency. They both ended up joining a young Atlanta Falcons squad who is now led by veteran Kirk Cousins.

The 49ers did have a plan at tight end before Thomas came in. They were supposed to reel in Brock Wright but the Detroit Lions knew that they could not give Kyle Shanahan the talent of their tight end. Wright ended up getting an offer that is worth $12 million and spans for three years. That number was enough to nudge him toward the Lions and made the 49ers effectively lose the sweepstakes.

A lot has been going on in this position for the 49ers. Thankfully, they found a backup for George Kittle.
