Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers experienced an unusually large amount of injuries in 2020, and the bug has hit again early in 2021.

Offensive tackle Justin Skule and safety Tarvarius Moore both suffered debilitating injuries during 49ers practice on Monday. Skule tore his ACL, while Moore has a torn Achilles. Matt Barrows of The Athletic reported Moore could return at the end of the season if his recovery goes according to plan.

Skule had been starting at left tackle in place of Trent Williams, while Moore was the starting strong safety with Jaquiski Tartt out with a toe injury.

The 49ers can only hope this is not an omen of things to come.

San Francisco came into 2020 as one of the favorites in the NFC. The 49ers were fresh off a Super Bowl appearance and were returning a number of starters on both sides of the ball. It wasn't long before disaster struck, though.

Star defensive end and 2019 Defensive Rookie of the Year Nick Bosa suffered a torn ACL in Week 2 against the New York Jets. That game would see Solomon Thomas go down for the season, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, defensive lineman Dee Ford and running back Raheem Mostert also leaving with injuries.

Injuries became a trend for the 49ers. The likes of Garoppolo, Mostert and All-Pro tight end George Kittle missed extensive time. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel was also on the shelf for a period.

The long list of physical setbacks ultimately doomed the 49ers in their quest to get back to the Super Bowl. Niners fans can only hope that trend does not continue into 2021.
