The San Francisco 49ers haven't made the playoffs in consecutive seasons since the 2012 and 2013 seasons. They have a golden opportunity to do so now with a well-rounded, star-laden roster.
San Francisco is looking to make moves and is positioned to do so ahead of NFL free agency's official start at 4:00 p.m. ET today. According to ESPN's Field Yates, the 49ers created nearly $19 million in cap space by restructuring two of their biggest contracts. Arik Armstead and George Kittle, who are both signed to expensive, multi-year contracts, had their deals reworked.

Kittle and Armstead are both key players for San Francisco. With 910 receiving yards and 71 catches, Kittle ranked second only to All-Pro Deebo Samuel in those categories. He is one of the best tight ends in the whole NFL. Armstead ranked third on the team in sacks and was top-five in tackles for loss and quarterback hits. He played a critical role in the pass rush alongside Nick Bosa.
The 49ers could open even more cap space once they find a trade partner for Jimmy Garoppolo. With Deshaun Watson dominating the trade market for quarterbacks, the Niners should be able to offer Garoppolo as a consolation prize for teams once the Houston Texans trade Watson.
San Francisco will have lots of competition just in their own division with the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals. But they also have the opportunity to emerge as one of the NFL's truly elite teams. They are strong on both sides of the ball, though the offense will hinge heavily on young quarterback Trey Lance. The talent around him should be enough for him to succeed.
