The San Francisco 49ers front office is staying busy during training camp. The team announced that they cut wide receiver Chris Thompson, according to Pro Football Talk.

Thompson last played for the Orlando Apollos of the AAF, and caught on with Niners shortly after. San Francisco has tons of wideouts with NFL experience on their roster, so the cut isn't entirely surprising.

Despite having a lot of depth in the receiver room, coach Kyle Shanahan and his offense are lacking a true star. General manager John Lynch attempted to swing a trade for wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., but failed. San Francisco also pursued Antonio Brown, but couldn't get a deal done. The most talented wideout on the roster is second-year speedster Dante Pettis.

Pettis flashed a good connection with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo early last season before Garoppolo's injury. The former Washington Huskie dealt with his own injury problems, but showed plenty of potential.

Other receiver Trent Taylor has reportedly been putting on a show in training camp. If Taylor can make meaningful contributions, it would give the Niners a solid top three options, with Marquise Goodwin rounding out the trio. The wild cards of the receiving corps are rookies Deebo Samuel and Jalen Hurd. Samuel is likely to contribute heavily on special teams, while the latter's role is a little more specialized. Hurd played running back and played it well in college, before opting to change positions. Shanahan has said that the former Baylor Bear will play both running back and receiver.

Hopefully, all of these names can push the San Francisco offense to a new level come 2019.
