Jimmy Garoppolo experienced some struggles during the San Francisco 49ers' Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Following his disappointing performance to begin the season, Kyle Shanahan shared the ‘common' problem that Garoppolo exhibits during games.
“That’s a very common thing,” Shanahan told reporters, via ProFootballTalk. “All the time throughout every game, there’s going to be times where a quarterback either goes too fast through a progression or too slow. Sometimes it’s harder when you’re amped up and everything, so you’re just trying to find that even keeled throughout the game, that balance of being amped up and trying to keep your rhythm of the game. So there was a couple he might’ve been a little too fast on, a couple a little too slow, but that’s pretty normal. That wasn’t everything, but there was a couple he was like that on.”
In his first game since the Super Bowl in February, Garoppolo completed 19 of his 33 attempts for the 49ers versus the Cardinals. He would proceed to finish with 259 yards and two touchdowns.
While it looks like he had a solid outing, Garoppolo seemed to falter at making reads on Arizona's defense. At the same time, Garoppolo didn't seem to have trust in the wide receivers that were on the field for the 49ers, who have been ravaged by injuries.
Garoppolo was without Deebo Samuel and rookie Brandon Aiyuk, with George Kittle playing with a sprained knee. Kittle has already been ruled out for the 49ers in Week 2.
Heading into Sunday's contest versus the New York Jets, Shanahan will hope to see a more decisive version of Garoppolo commanding the offense. Look for Shanahan to get the veteran signal-caller into a rhythm early in Week 2 for the 49ers.
