Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur views San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel as one of the “elite” wideouts in the NFL today.
In speaking during a press conference ahead of the Packers’ upcoming NFC divisional round clash against the 49ers, LaFleur explained on why Samuel’s versatility makes him a unique wideout in the league.
“He's one of the more elite players in this league,” LaFleur said. “They just try to find different ways to get him the ball, whether it's handing it off, whether it's reverses in the passing game.
“He's a physical guy, and I think it does present some problems when you just aren't quite sure where he's going to line up. Is he going to be in the halfback position? Are the halfbacks going to be out wide or vice versa?
“He's a guy that we certainly have to account for on every play.”
Samuel’s versatility has added an extra dimension to the 49ers’ attack on offense. Whether it is out of the backfield or out wide as a receiver, 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel sure has made the most out of Samuel’s skill set as an all-around threat on offense.
Samuel played a vital role in the 49ers’ NFC wild-card upset road win over the Dallas Cowboys, as he totaled for 110 yards from scrimmage and one touchdown. His 26-yard rushing touchdown score in the third quarter wound up being the game-winner for San Francisco.
The 49ers may end up making Samuel a focal point of their game plan on offense against a Packers defense that features multiple standout tacklers in the open field.
