After failing to qualify for the 2021 World Championship, G2 Esports isn't taking the subpar performance lightly—eyeing a “very exciting” rebuild of its League of Legends (LoL) roster. Owner Carlos Rodriguez announced in a Twitter video that the organization is “looking to trade” several members of the team. In a surprise move, the benched players include recently acquired Martin “Rekkles” Larsson, who joined G2 after ending his five-year stint with Fnatic.

“These changes are very, very tough to make,” Rodriguez shared. “Everything we have done since the inception of G2 and everything we are doing now is to win Worlds.”

With a drastic roster overhaul on the horizon, G2 will be listening to trade offers for Martin “Wunder” Nordahl Hansen, Mihael “Mikyx” Mehle, and Sng “Nelson” Yi-Wei. The organization is also set to part ways with head coach Fabian “GrabbZ” Lohmann and the rest of the support staff, Rodriguez revealed.

G2 had a tough 2021 season, to say the least, dropping the firm hold it once had over the LEC. Many fans were also expecting that signing Rekkles would help keep the team at the pinnacle of Europe's pro league, but the huge move did not work out for both sides.

Not only did G2 miss Worlds for the first time in three years, but the team had always reached the semi-finals stage in the seasons before. Comparing those deep international runs to their 2021 performance and roster changes were bound to happen.

As it stands, only Rasmus “Caps” Borregaard Winther and Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski will stay at G2 for next season. No names have been flying around the rumor mill just yet, but G2 fans hope that the roster rebuild will mean a return to the top of the LEC table in 2022.
