Ohio State football fans haven't been thrilled with what they've seen on the field the past few years as they haven't beaten rival Michigan since 2019, but one thing that hasn't skipped a beat is recruiting. Credit where credit is due: Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day does a good job of getting top talent to Ohio State. One position that the Buckeyes especially excel at is wide receiver, and they are getting closer to landing a commitment from four-star WR Vernell Brown III after his official visit.

Vernell Brown III visited Ohio State football recently, and the visit clearly went well. Brown is obviously impressed with the track record of WR coach Brian Hartline, and he is also impressed with the overall state of the program.
“I would say even bigger than coach Hartline, just the Ohio State atmosphere, they're a really good team,” Brown said, according to a tweet from Mick Walker.
Brown is currently ranked as the #39 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class by 247 Sports. He is the #6 WR in the class and he is the #6 player in the state of Florida. He currently attends Jones High School in Orlando, Florida.
Ohio State football has some stiff competition

Ohio State football has a lot of tough competition recruiting Vernell Brown III, as there are a lot of big-name schools that wan to land his commitment. Brown is a Florida kid, so Florida football is a team to watch.
“I mean, I come from a Florida Gator family, so I definitely rooted for the Gators,” Brown said when he was asked by Josh Newberg who he rooted for growing up.
Brown's dad even played at Florida, which was part of the recruiting pitch.
Article Continues Below“They use a little bit of a different approach than everyone else, just because they can with my dad playing there,” Brown said when he was asked about how Florida has been recruiting him. “They use that legacy approach. They've done that a lot recently, just saying it would mean more for me playing at home, essentially.”
Brown grew up in Gainesville and lived there for the early stages of his life. He was asked if going there for visits was more fun than other places.
“I wouldn't say more fun, just because I'm from Gainesville, I lived there until I was nine,” Brown said. “So it's kinda like, I know it already, so definitely nice to see some new things.”
On3 Recruits actually recently came out with a report saying that Florida football and Florida State were in the best position to land Brown.
“Florida State and Florida are in the best position right now for elite 4-star WR Vernell Brown III, according to @ChadSimmons_ and @SWiltfong_,” The report said. “Brown ranks No. 35 NATL. (No. 6 WR) in the 2025 class.”
However, Brown also recently discussed Ohio State football and, the Buckeyes are in a good spot as well.
“I think they gained a whole lot of traction around that time in May,” Brown said. “I think went twice in two weeks. So definitely gained a huge amount of traction then, but I think now going into these OVs (official visits) it's kind of an easy race.”
According to Vernell Brown III, it's anyone's game right now. Ohio State football does a great job of pumping out NFL WRs, so they're a good choice for any recruit.
