The Edmonton Oilers announced on Sunday that superstar Connor McDavid would miss one to two weeks. It served as another brutal blow to what has been a disastrous start to the season. McDavid's timeline would have him miss the Heritage Classic against the Calgary Flames on Sunday. However, that may no longer be the case.

Head coach Jay Woodcroft did not rule McDavid out for Sunday's game. “I’ve learned when it comes to Connor, nothing is off the table,” Woodcroft said Monday, via Sportsnet. “I take the time frame that was put out there yesterday as good news. We’ll see how he does, he’s just got to get healthy here.”

The Oilers superstar suffered an upper-body injury against the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. Woodcroft mentioned after the game that he believed the injury to be more muscular in nature. The Oilers head coach offered this as good news on Monday.

Edmonton can ill afford to allow this poor start to snowball. The Oilers are 1-3-1 so far this season, with their latest loss coming coming to the Jets. Their worst loss of the season came on opening night when they fell 8-1 to the Vancouver Canucks. Woodcroft mentioned that McDavid's absence could serve as motivation for this Oilers squad.

“You’re always looking for opportunities that present themselves to serve as fuel; this is certainly one of them,” the 47-year-old head coach said. “I think there’s been positive signs in our team game.”

The Oilers have two games ahead of them before Sunday's Heritage Classic. Edmonton heads to the State of Hockey to take on the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday. On Thursday, the Oilers return home to take on the New York Rangers.
