Edmonton Oilers center Leon Draisaitl joined truly elite company Sunday night, after tallying another goal and two assists in the Oilers win at St. Louis, 5-4. Draisaitl now has 15 goals and 16 assists in his team's first 14 games of the season.

Over the last 30 NHL seasons, only Pittsburgh Penguins greats Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr have accomplished that feat, scoring at least 15 of each in their team's first 15 games. Ironically, they did that as teammates. Lemieux did it during the 1992-1993 season when Pittsburgh was coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup championships. Jagr then did it a few seasons later, during the 1995-1996 season.

Draisaitl has been among the league's best players for the last handful of years. In 2020, Draisaitl won the Hart Memorial Trophy as the league MVP, as well as the Ted Lindsay Trophy. That award is given out to the most outstanding player and is voted on by the players.

For good measure, he also won the Art Ross Trophy as the league's top scorer.

Draisaitl joined Dirk Nowitzki as the only German born players to win a league MVP in one of the four major North American sports.

He has been carrying the Oilers this season as they are off to a hot start. Edmonton sits atop the Pacific Division with an 11-3 record, for 22 points.

Draisaitl hopes to follow Lemieux's legacy and lead his team to a Cup. Were he to pull it off, Edmonton would become the first Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup since the Montreal Canadiens did it in 1993. Last season, the Canadiens made it all the way to the final, only to lose to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
