The Euro 2020 tournament will be postponed until 2021 after UEFA reached an agreement with key governing bodies on Tuesday, according to BBC Sports.
It was long rumored that the popular European soccer tournament would take a halt amid the coronavirus pandemic that has quickly spread throughout parts of Europe, leaving the competition's fate in limbo.
UEFA held a video conference with all 55 of its affiliated national football federations along with the representatives of clubs, leagues, and players. The decision to reschedule the European Championship was made, leaving domestic leagues free to complete their local league schedules as they wish.
The outbreak of the coronavirus has already had a major impact in the five major leagues in Europe.
All elite football in England has been canceled until April 4, subject to “conditions at the time.” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was the first major case diagnosed with the coronavirus, which bent the initial will to play Premier League games as scheduled.
Article Continues BelowSpain has suspended all top-flight soccer until April 4, at which point the FEF will “revaluate” the situation in La Liga. France initially planned to play behind closed doors for all Ligue 1 matches, but has since halted operations “until further notice.”
The Bundesliga has been suspended until at least April 2 in Germany.
The worst case comes from Italy, which has the highest number of cases in Europe, with the country currently in lockdown shortly after Serie A was brought to a halt.
Euro 2020 was due to take place from June 12 to July 12 this year across 12 venues in Europe. The Norwegian Football Association said the tournament will now take place from June 11 to July 11 in 2021.
