The Denver Nuggets were just a Nikola Jokic basket away from sending the game into overtime against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night. But alas, fate wanted to go to bed early.

Down by two points with only nine seconds left in the fourth quarter, Jokic attempted an 11-foot shot in hopes of extending the contest. But it didn't go in, allowing the Grizzlies to escape, 108-106.

When asked about his muffed attempt after the game, Jokic, usually soft-spoken and self-effacing despite being the reigning MVP, projected a bolder version of himself (via ESPN).

“I will take that shot any day. I'm really comfortable taking that shot. I'm not doubting myself. It was a good shot.”

To some, that might sound like a pedestrian quote. But coming from Jokic, it's quite a novelty.

There wasn't new, however, about his performance against the Grizzlies. Like he's done in the past few years, Jokic delivered all-around numbers of 34 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and two steals. But his monster effort wasn't enough as the Nuggets fell to an even 4-4.

The Nuggets found themselves in a deep hole in the first quarter, which proved to be a telling factor in their defeat. For Jokic, it was inexcusable.

“It seems like every game, we have one part of the game where we are playing really bad. I don't know what it is, but we need to figure it out.”

Nikola Jokic is having another impressive season but as he said, they can't always play catch-up hoops. Good thing he's being more vocal.
