The Green Bay Packers' wide receiver group isn't anything to write home about. Davante Adams is a superstar, but behind him the others won't be turning any heads. If it wasn't for Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, they'd be viewed in an even worse light. This is where Marquez Valdes-Scantling comes into play.

Certain talent that wouldn't get a chance to shine elsewhere will get the opportunity in Green Bay.

One example of that kind of player is Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who has the inside track for the second receiver spot.

Coming into camp, most people had to think Marquez Valdes-Scantling had the edge for the second spot. Last season he was second among receivers in receptions (38), yards (581) and touchdowns (2).

His main competition is Equanimeous St. Brown. Last year, St. Brown was fourth in receptions (21) and yards (328) among Packer receivers, while having no touchdowns. The player in third for those two categories was Randall Cobb, who isn't on the team anymore.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling is also a very solid deep threat, something the Packers definitely tried to utilize last season. This is due to his 6-4, 206-pound frame and solid athleticism. It makes him a fun target for Rodgers to hit on deep routes, and he spreads the defense out.

That spreading of the defense could be very dangerous. It will leave more middle and short routes open for the two heavy hitters of the offense, Adams and tight end Jimmy Graham.

Of course, just because he has the clear upper hand right now doesn't mean that will stick. This is very much a competition. Marquez Valdes-Scantling will have to hold off Equanimeous St. Brown and others to keep his spot. Don't bank on him doing anything to lose it.
