The San Diego Padres had a lot of fun at the expense of Detroit Tigers pitching over the first two games of their three-game series. And it seemed like they would pounce once again on Sunday. Detroit sent Alex Faedo, sporting a 6.98 ERA in the majors, to the mound for the final game.

However, the Padres didn't pounce on Faedo. In fact, they laid a complete goose egg against him. Detroit's former first-round pick threw six shutout innings. He allowed one hit to Padres hitters while walking four of them.

In the end, the Tigers emerged victorious with a 3-1 win to avoid the sweep. Tigers hitters Spencer Torkelson and Andy Ibanez went deep to help support Faedo's effort on the mound.

After the game, Padres manager Bob Melvin spoke with the media. As you could expect, the San Diego skipper was less than pleased with his team's performance in the final game of the series.

“To tell you the truth, this was a pretty disappointing effort,” Melvin said, via The Associated Press. “Nothing against their starter, but we have got to have a better approach and put more pressure on him. Our bats looked better against the plus relievers they had in at the end.”

Melvin certainly had a point in his assessment. San Diego's only run of the game came off reliever Beau Briske, who allowed two hits. They also worked 22 pitches out of closer Alex Lange in the ninth inning.

In the end, it wasn't a great effort. Starter Joe Musgrove allowed three runs and seven hits in his first loss since May 20. The Padres fell to 48-52 on the season, sitting in fourth place in the NL West. The team can begin to bounce back from this loss on Monday when they face the Pittsburgh Pirates.
