The San Diego Padres are trying to contend for the World Series in 2022, but there are a few contracts they're hoping to get off the books in order to better position themselves to do so. Reports regarding San Diego's desire to offload Wil Myers and Eric Hosmer have surfaced, and now another name has been added to the mix. According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, the Padres are looking to deal Dinelson Lamet in order to free up some money.
The Padres have been discussing Dinelson Lamet with other teams, per sources. Lamet, who is pitching out of the bullpen, is making $4.775 million in his second-to-last arb year. San Diego would like to create some flexibility for potential reinforcements on offense.

Lamet, who was once a promising starter for the Padres, had his career derailed by injury. He's now serving in San Diego's bullpen, where he's logged a 5.40 ERA across seven appearances in 2022. He's pitched a total of 6.2 innings, striking out 9 batters and walking 4.
Lamet is making $4.775 million this season, per Lin, and has one more year of arbitration before entering free agency for the first time. The Padres are hoping to find someone interested in bringing in the right-hander via trade in order to free up financial flexibility to pursue some players on offense.
The 29-year-old has always been an elite strikeout pitcher, but he's struggled to stay healthy. Throughout his career, Lamet owns a 3.89 ERA with 403 strikeouts in 310 innings, good for an impressive 11.7 K/9. He started 9 games for the Padres last year but was ultimately utilized as a reliever, making 19 appearances out of the bullpen.
The Padres already traded Chris Paddack to the Minnesota Twins ahead of the 2022 MLB season, and now they could look to part ways with Lamet in order to expedite their run to the World Series.
