It's official. Cam Newton is heading back to the Carolina Panthers. After meeting with several front office figures on Thursday, the team has decided to sign the free-agent quarterback in the wake of Sam Darnold's shoulder injury. Via Ian Rapoport:
Newton was released by the New England Patriots prior to the 2021 season due to his vaccination status and the franchise looking to move forward with Mac Jones as their QB1. Since, Newton has received the COVID-19 vaccine and now will get an opportunity with the Panthers.
After all, this is where it all started for Newton. He was drafted first overall by Carolina in 2011 and even won the 2015 MVP after leading them to a Super Bowl and a 15-1 season. This is a great opportunity for the veteran signal-caller and a chance to prove that he can still be an effective quarterback in this league.
Darnold is expected to miss 4-6 weeks for the Panthers, while P.J. Walker has limited experience as a starter. Newton will come in and be the main man. Coming back to the place where he enjoyed so much success could potentially help Newton find his brilliance once again as well. It's an organization that loves and appreciates him.
It will be very interesting to see how Newton fares with the Panthers. They face the 8-1 Arizona Cardinals in Week 10, but it's unknown at the moment if he'll be able to suit up.
