In the months that have followed Super Bowl 52, there remains no clarity on why New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick benched former Pro Bowl cornerback Malcolm Butler. It has remained one of the biggest unanswered questions as the 2018 campaign approaches.

During a media session, Belichick was asked by Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy about the situation, and he decided to continue to remain mum on how things unfolded by stating his focus is directly on this upcoming season. (h/t Kevin Patra of NFL.com)

R: Do you care that the fans want to know more about this?

BB: “I'm focused on doing the best that I can for the 2018 New England Patriots. That's my job and that's what I've always done in the past. Every day that I've coached here I've done the best that I can for this football team and I'll continue to do that. Right now, my focus is on 2018 season, not 2017, not 2014, not 2007, not 2004, not 2001, not 2000. I'm not focused on any of those seasons; they're done.”

R: For this season's team, is it important to address the Malcolm Butler [situation] with your team?

BB: “It's important for me to have a good season in 2018. I'm doing everything I can to do that. I'm doing the best that I can for our football team; that's my job, that's my responsibility and that's what I'm trying to do. Hopefully you can respect that; maybe not.”

It has become quite clear that this is something that Belichick won't ever truly address as he's looking to further distance himself from the entire ordeal. Even though it happened all the way back in February, the fact that it was in Super Bowl 52 only shines more light on what occurred as Belichick decided to sit arguably his best defensive back in the biggest game of the year.

Regardless, if he's trying to push his way past it all, it may be difficult given the magnitude of the move at that moment, as there is still no clear explanation on why Belichick made that choice.
