Inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo was impressive calling plays on defense during minicamp for the New England Patriots, but it still looks like Bill Belichick will still call them once the regular season rolls around.

According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, even though Mayo was impressive and really opened up Belichick's eyes, he isn't quite ready to hand over the play-calling duties for the upcoming season.

“While inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo called the defensive plays for much of minicamp, the plan is still for Belichick to handle those responsibilities during the season. Mayo has been predictably impressive during his first few months on the job, but it would take a change in course for him to earn play-calling duties this early. It’s certainly possible that could happen in 2020. This part is a total guess on my behalf, but I could see Mayo becoming the play caller in 2020 and the defensive coordinator as early as 2021.”

Mayo is only 33 years old and this his first coaching stop after being a standout for many years on the Patriots defense. Belichick has always been about grooming young coaches and helping them rise through the ranks so it's really not a surprise to many that he has taken a liking to Mayo's coaching ability.

It seems like this is a situation where Belichick will continue to put more and more on Mayo's plate until he is fully ready for him to take charge of the defense. Who knows, maybe one day down the road he can be the one to replace Belichick as the head coach in Foxborough.
