Any football fan that has seen a New England Patriots game should know the story of Tom Brady. After being selected with the 199th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, Brady went on to become one of the best quarterbacks to ever play football, with many crowning him as the greatest player of all time.

His story is well known, but for ex-general manager Mike Tannenbaum, he had no idea that Brady would become who he was.

Tannenbaum, who was the general manager of the New York Jets at the time, appeared on ESPN’s NFL Live recently, and discussed that draft. According to Tannenbaum, those in the Jets war room weren't all excited about their quarterback selection.

“Actually I was in the draft room, I’ll never forget it. We had four first-round picks in 2000 and we took Chad Pennington with the third of the four picks,” Tannenbaum said via 247 Sports. “And in the third round that year, this is remarkable — Bill Walsh drafts Giovanni Carmazzi of Hostra University, which was right across from the Jets facility and we’re like, ‘Oh my God, we blew it.’ Bill Walsh, this quarterback whisperer, takes Carmazzi, who’s across the street, in the third round. And we’re like, ‘Oh man. We just blew it.’ And then in the sixth round, some guy named Tom Brady went with the 199th pick.”

Obviously, no one knew that Tom Brady would become who he is today, so it’s a bit hard to hold any team responsible for not picking him.

At the time, Brady was simply seen as someone who might be able to come in and make for a good backup.

Of course, the Patriots ended up getting extremely lucky during their 2000 draft, and have reaped plenty of rewards for it.
