Herm Edwards thinks New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady still has a lot left in the tank. Herman, who was a guest on ESPN’s First Take, disagreed with Max Kellerman’s take that Brady will begin to “fall off a cliff” soon. The former New York Jets coach insisted Brady is different and would prove history wrong.

“Hey Max, you forget about one thing,” Edwards said on First Take. “That’s not Tom Brady, that’s Captain America. He’s different. He’s different and sometimes history proves us all wrong. And I think this guy, this guy is a guy who wants to prove history wrong. We’ve seen it before. We’ve seen it before.”

The 40-year-old Brady is playing in his 19th season in the NFL and is having another outstanding season. He’s leading the NFL in passing yards with 2,541, is fifth in completion percentage at 66.7 percent, and is tied for third in touchdowns with 16.

Apart from this season, though, the Patriots are betting on Brady to still have a few more very good years in him after they traded his backup and potential successor, Jimmy Garoppolo, to the San Francisco 49ers.

There are only a handful of quarterbacks in NFL history who have continued to play at a high level after going over 40. Herman may prove to be right in thinking Brady is one of those rare exceptions, but after dealing away Garoppolo, the Patriots will still need to prepare another backup plan in the event that Brady does fall off.

Brian Hoyer is not, obviously, the answer for the future.
