The New England Patriots had a nightmare playoff performances against the Buffalo Bills in Wild Card Weekend.
Despite the lopsided result, Patriots tight end Hunter Henry made sure to get in quarterback Mac Jones' ear that this was all part of the process. During the waning moments of the game, the two shared a sideline moment caught on camera.
Henry was asked during a zoom press conference regarding what exactly he said the the young Patriots signal-caller.
Via Zach Cox of NESN:
“I think the biggest thing is I’m just trying to — it’s a long season, man, and I’m really proud of Mac,” Henry said. “I’m proud of how he handled it. We didn’t play like we wanted to (Saturday) night. We honestly didn’t play well down the stretch, like we wanted to. But the biggest thing from this is how we grow, how we learn from this. Obviously, we got a lot better throughout the year, and I think I’m excited to grow with him this offseason — grow together in our relationship, grow together in our chemistry.”
Nearly everything went wrong for the Patriots in their 47-17 loss, but Mac Jones was far from the biggest culprit. The rookie finished with 232 passing yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. The first pick was on an excellent play from Micah Hyde that was nearly a touchdown pass, the second was off a deflection that his receiver wasn't able to corral cleanly.
“I’m excited to have him as my quarterback, and (I was) just reaffirming to him that this is a big moment and something that we’re going to learn from and grow from and continue to get better,” the Patriots TE continued. “That’s the biggest thing: improvement. He’s got 18 games, (with) preseason, 20 games behind his belt now, and you can’t take that lightly, so that’s huge for him.”
The New England Patriots have a lot of work to do in the offseason. The loss stings for now, but it ultimately could fuel Mac Jones even more as he tries to establish himself as the franchise's next great QB.
