New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been a hot coaching candidate for the last few years, and it's expected two teams are going to be interested in his services this season.
Two offseasons ago, McDaniels took the Indianapolis Colts job before backing out of the agreement and going back to the Patriots. It's unclear at this point if he is ready to leave the Patriots; if he is, it seems like he could have a job offer.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated appeared on NBC Sports Boston's “Arbella Early Edition” and revealed that the Patriots OC probably would have left for two jobs the last offseason.
“I think there are two jobs that Josh would have left for last year: the Cleveland Browns, the Green Bay Packers. One interviewed him and didn't give him an offer, the other one didn't interview him at all.”
Breer said he thinks there are two jobs that McDaniels would leave the Patriots for: the Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers.
“I think there are two jobs he would leave for this offseason: the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Panthers.”
“I think in both spots the owners are interested in Josh McDaniels. In Cleveland, he'd get to go home and he'd get to work with a quarterback in Baker Mayfield that he really likes. In Carolina, the coach is going to have a lot of power.”
“He could bring someone with him, potentially. Somebody like the pro director here in New England, Dave Ziegler, could be his assistant GM. The owner there is going to give the coach some power over that. So I think in both situations there will be a chance to set things up the way that he wants to set them up.”
Breer said he thinks it's a 50/50 chance that he will be coaching his last games with the Patriots this season. This seems like a little more complicated situation than usual because of what happened a few years ago with the Colts. Are teams that have an interest in him going to take their time interviewing McDaniels if they think he could change his mind and stay with the Patriots?
This will be a story to keep a close eye on the next few years.
