The New England Patriots' decision to part ways with Cam Newton took many by surprise. That list doesn't include his quarterback competition in Mac Jones.

Mac Jones recently spoke out on WEEI's Merloni and Fauria radio show to discuss the departing Patriots QB1 from last season.  The rookie quarterback revealed he wasn't exactly shocked.

“Not really. Like I always say, I prepare to be the starter. I got a chance to get a lot of reps. Nothing really changes. “

Jones has harped all offseason long about how he prepares as if he's going to be the starter. His answer has been the same even as Newton seemed likely to get the job from weeks back, up until now that he's firmly entrenched into the starting role.

“He was a really good mentor to me,” said Jones. “I know we'll stay in touch. Ever since I came here, he knew I was here to help him and he was here to help me, so I never felt like we were butting heads or anything like that,” said the Patriots rookie.

All eyes were on both Newton and Jones throughout training camp and preseason competition. By most accounts, their relationship was indeed mutually beneficial, with the two both learning from each other.

“Obviously Cam is a great guy, a great player, and hopefully he lands somewhere. I definitely learned a lot from him and I'm excited to keep learning from Brian [Hoyer] and everyone in the quarterback room.”

Mac Jones has the opportunity of a lifetime, being given the keys to the most successful NFL franchise in the last two decades. Patriots fans can only hope he lives up to the billing.
