The New England Patriots have decided to add some quarterback depth signing Cody Kessler, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

It's unclear exactly what prompted the signing but all signs point towards it being because of rookie Jarrett Stidham's performance during garbage time against the New York Jets. He went 2-3 throwing for 14 yards, but the one incompletion was an interception by Jets safety Jamal Adams that was returned for a touchdown.

“It’s obviously not how you want to start things,” Stidham said after the game via NESN. “I’ve just got to continue to trust in my ability and get the ball to the receivers the right away. I got a lot of work today. I’m excited about that. Just got to do better. …

“Obviously, I’m very thankful to get a few snaps. But wish it would’ve gone a little better. I just have to make a better throw, so I’m going to continue to get better and have a next-play mentality.”

Stidham was drafted in April in the 4th round by the Patriots, so it's hard to imagine the team would cut him after this, but he could be moved to 3rd string.

Kessler was a third-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2016, and he stayed with them until he was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018. With the Jaguars he started four games passing for 709 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

He has some good NFL game experience so if Brady was lost because of injury, Kessler could fill the role.
