The New England Patriots added to their stable of running backs this year when they drafted Alabama running back Damien Harris with the 87th overall pick (third round) of the 2019 NFL Draft.

While Harris was known for his bruising style of running in college, Pro Football Focus has helped put that into context recently.

The analytics company shared a stat that showed just how good of a runner Harris is. According to them, Harris averaged 3.16 yards after contact per carry last year at Alabama. Needless to say, that means Harris was extremely hard to bring down last year, also forcing 22 missed tackles in the rushing game as well.

While Harris was a force to be reckoned with, it remains to be seen what type of role he’ll have in New England. The Patriots have been utilizing running backs more in recent years, but the team does have a very good group of backs at their disposal already.

Last year’s first-round selection, Sony Michel, proved to be an incredible pick for the Super Bowl Champions, and players like James White and Rex Burkhead have provided some excellent depth as well.

As the Patriots try to make it back to the Super Bowl and win their second straight title, they’ll need all the help they can get from players like Harris, even if it’s just in a smaller role than what he was used to at Alabama.

The Patriots have notoriously gotten great value out of players that no one thought would provide much, and they can continue that trend if Harris proves to be as good of a runner in the NFL.
