New England Patriots running back Sony Michel is recovering from foot surgery he had back in May according to Mike Reiss of ESPN. According to sources, the surgery is more about maintenance to help with some discomfort that he has been dealing with. Michel is already back in Foxbourgh rehabbing and there is a chance he could have to start training camp on PUP.

The Patriots are scheduled to return for training camp in late July, but Michel is already back in Foxborough as part of his rehabilitation. How Michel progresses will ultimately determine whether he starts training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

If Michel does end up having to miss any games, that is going to be a big loss for the Patriots. The Patriots use a running back by committee approach, but he has led the team in rushing yards in each of the last two seasons. During the 2019 season, Michel had 247 carries for 912 yards and seven touchdowns.

Since coming into the league, Michel has dealt with multiple injuries. But the foot injury is new. During training camp as a rookie he had fluid drained from his knee, and during last offseason, he had a knee scope.

The Patriots also have Damien Harris and J.J. Taylor, James White, Rex Burkhead, Brandon Bolden. If Michel does miss some time, it could be a chance for Harris to get some more playing time. He was a third-round pick during the 2019 draft, but he only found the field in two games.
