New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wasn’t expected to be present at the start of the team’s voluntary offseason workouts since he’d be traveling back from his charity work in Qatar. As it turns out, though, Brady may not be taking part in the Patriots’ offseason program at all even after he returns.

At least that’s what ESPN’s Jeff Darlington is expecting. He reports that in lieu of working out with his fellow Patriots in the team’s facility, Brady plans to spend more time with his family and personal trainer Alex Guerrero.

“I would call it unlikely, at this point, that he is a part of any of the voluntary program this offseason,” Darlington said. “How far he extends that is a major question, one that I don’t know that even Brady has the answer to.”

Darlington did note in his tweet that this isn’t the first time Brady has decided to skip parts of the team’s offseason program since that also happened from 2008-10. However, Brady’s potential absence is still significant because it’ll be almost a decade since he’s done so, and also because of his relationship with Guerrero.

If Bill Belichick’s reported antipathy toward Guerrero is true, then Brady’s decision to spend more time with his personal trainer as opposed to the team’s own staff likely won’t sit well with the Patriots head coach. But this seems to be the path his star quarterback wants to take, so even Belichick will unlikely be able to do much about it.
