Throughout his NBA career, Tony Allen of the New Orleans Pelicans has established himself as a tenacious competitor and is well respected around the NBA for how he plays defense. It can be recalled that even Kobe Bryant named him the best player to defend him during his career, which is a huge praise to how he has placed a high premium on that end of the floor.

Now playing for New Orleans, head coach Alvin Gentry was asked if he thinks some players are scared to play against the 14-year veteran. He admitted that he is uncertain if the word “scared” is applicable, but he said he believes Allen is not the best player for them to challenge during games.

Allen may only be averaging 4.8 points and 1.9 rebounds in 12.4 minutes this season, but his impact on the game is more than just his production on the stat sheet. He gives the Pelicans the veteran presence they need, and a locker room leader as well, especially to their young players.

Gentry’s statement only goes to show how much he respects Allen’s all-around game. He thinks very highly of him and knows what he can contribute to his team even when he’s not on the floor. With the Pelicans looking to make some noise in the Western Conference this year, it can be expected that 35-year-old will play a crucial role for them, and help the franchise make it back to the postseason.
