New Orleans Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations David Griffin believes that Alvin Gentry is ‘exactly the right coach at the right time' for the team.

The Pelicans have exercised its team option on Gentry's contract for the 2020-21 season. Griffin then addressed the decision, saying that they feel that Gentry is the perfect coach to spearhead what they are building.

“We couldn’t be happier to extend our relationship with Alvin,” said Griffin, via NBA.com. “He is exactly the right coach at the right time for this franchise. As I have mentioned several times previously, the shared vision we have for the future of Pelicans basketball both on and off the floor will enable us to build a roster that fits both culturally and tactically. Perhaps more importantly, the relationship we have built over our many years together will enable us to challenge, empower and further one another and our franchise.”

Gentry has been the team's head coach since 2015 and has culled a 145-183 (.442) record. Along the way, he has guided the team to two playoff appearances. The furthest they've been to was the Western Conference Semifinals in 2018. Prior to being the team's head coach, Gentry was an assistant coach in many NBA teams including the 2015 Golden State Warriors championship team.

Entering the 2019-20 season, Gentry will have the task of syncing in their new acquisitions: Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, and possibly Zion Willamson. It'll be a tall order for the 64-year-old coach, but given his significant experience and success, he has an ample set of tools to do it.
