The New Orleans Pelicans are one of only three teams that don't have control of their own G League team, but that was to change next season. However, Pelicans general manager Dell Demps recently revealed that the team will have to wait a bit longer for that to happen, per Adam Johnson of 2ways10days.com relaying an interview Demps did on a radio show.

“Right now, we’ve put things on pause. We’re trying to, you know, find the right situation, and the right city for the team to play is essential. Currently right now, you know, we use the G League and we’ve been using other teams that have G League teams and right now we just put things on pause until we can find the right home for us. I think it’s us and two other teams that do not have a direct affiliate right now. But it will come in the future, it’s just we haven’t narrowed down the specific spot yet.”

The story is the Pelicans simply ran out of cities to put a G League team. They had 11 suitors, which then was reduced to only one. It appears that prompted the shift in message from Demps.

The fact that one day every NBA team will have a G League affiliate is a good thing. But the Pelicans having to wait to get a G League team until further notice is bad news for the franchise. While they have been getting players from other team's minor-league affiliates, it's always better to have your own players getting used to your own system and being able to get called up to the team and not miss a beat.

But it will happen eventually. The Pelicans just have to be a little more patient.
