Chicago Bulls legend and Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan says Jordan Brand was “fortunate” New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson signed an endorsement deal with them.

Williamson signed a record rookie sneaker deal worth $75 million over five years with Jordan Brand. The Pelicans star made his regular season NBA debut on Wednesday against the San Antonio Spurs and finished with 22 points:

“It's not just me. The NBA is very fortunate to have a young man who shows so much passion for the game,” Michael Jordan said, via Sky Sports. “That is something you can't give. You are born with it and you want to share it with the rest of the world.

“Jordan Brand looks at Zion Williamson as an impact player who brings energy to the game of basketball. We were fortunate he chose us. We can't play basketball for him but we have the opportunity to showcase his talent. That is what our job is going to be. What you saw the other night is a taste of what to expect going forward. That's great for the league.”

Williamson is the new face of the Pelicans franchise now that Anthony Davis is gone. In his lone season at Duke, Williamson put on an absolute show. The high-flyer averaged 22.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 68.0 percent from the field, 33.8 percent from beyond the arc and 64.0 percent from the free-throw line.

It’s sort of fitting that Williamson is with Jordan Brand. Jordan is arguably the greatest dunker of all time. Watching Williamson dunk with the Pelicans this season while wearing Jordan Brand shoes just seems right.
