The New Orleans Pelicans are only two games into this NBA season, but they already look like the league's most unexpected surprise.

They are 2-0 right now, and they lead the NBA in points per game. First, they shocked the world be beating the Houston Rockets 131-112 in their season opener. The Rockets were considered to be the only team with a chance to beat the Golden State Warriors in a seven-game series last season, so this result was surprising. The Pelicans followed up by routing the Sacramento Kings 149-129 in their second game. Rotoworld tweeted that the Pelicans are scoring 127.9 points per 100 possessions, which is just plain outrageous.

Tommy Beer is an NBA analyst for NBC and Rotoworld, and he ranks the Pelicans among his top five teams in his NBA power rankings. The Pelicans lead the league in offense with an astounding 140 points per game, which is nearly 15 points better than the second place Sacramento Kings. It's not very likely that they keep this pace up, but they look like they'll definitely be better offensively this season.

Last season, the Pelicans averaged 111 points per game, which ranked them third in the NBA. The new rule that resets the shot clock to 14 seconds on offensive rebounds rather than 24 has clearly made a difference. Teams are shooting more, so they're scoring more as well. However, let's not chalk all their success up to a simple rule change.

The combination of Anthony Davis, Nikola Mirotic, Julius Randle, Jrue Holiday and Elfrid Payton give the Pelicans tremendous length and scoring potential. As the season proceeds, all eyes will be watching this squad, as fans will be curious to see how long they can continue their monstrous production.
