New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson has been on record saying his mom ordered him to watch video clips of Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson growing up.

Williamson was two years old when Jordan played his last game in April of 2003 with the Washington Wizards. The Pelicans high-flyer no doubt watched a lot of old games of Jordan, Magic and Bird, but Williamson also watched some players live on TV growing up as well.

“I watched a good bit of Melo (Carmelo Anthony), LeBron, (Trevor) Ariza when he was with the Hornets, with CP (Chris Paul),” Williamson said, via Joe Vardon of The Athletic. “CP too. I think any kid that pretty much wanted to be in the NBA, any player that’s been in the league since ’03, I think they watched him.”

All of the film Williamson watched growing up has paid off, as Zion recently became the first teenager in NBA history to score 20-plus points in 10 straight games.

Through his first 14 NBA games, Williamson is averaging 23.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists. The lefty is shooting 58.1 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from beyond the arc and 62.6 percent from the free-throw line.

There hasn’t been this much hype surrounding a young player since LeBron James came into the league back in 2003. So far, Williamson looks like he’s going to dominate the NBA for the next decade or so assuming he stays healthy.

It would be a great story if Zion Williamson is able to lead the Pelicans to the playoffs after missing the beginning of the season recovering from his knee surgery. His powerful dunks are already breaking backboards, and he is flying through the air just like Michael Jordan did with the Chicago Bulls.
