The New Orleans Pelicans have followed a positive postseason with a rather disappointing offseason, missing out on re-signing their All-Star DeMarcus Cousins only a year after trading for him, and their point guard Rajon Rondo, who agreed to ink a one-year, $9 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Franchise star Anthony Davis was reportedly unaware that talks for Rondo had been rotting, upset that two of his closest friends in Rondo and Cousins are no longer playing alongside him.

via Pelicans broadcaster David M. Grubb:

“Sources close to Anthony Davis have confirmed to me that he was neither aware nor consulted on the progress or [deterioration] of contract talks between the Pelicans and Rajon Rondo and that he wasn’t pleased. How this impacts his relationship with management remains to be seen.”

The Pelicans are hoping to lock down Davis for the long haul in 2019 with a supermax extension, but they will have some questions to answer after his frontcourt mate Cousins was offered nothing more than a two-year, $40 million commitment, before the offer was taken off the table prior to the offseason.

Now Rondo, who played a vital part in the Pelicans' success in the first round of the playoffs, has bolted for the Lakers on a one-year deal, leaving a potential re-shuffling for Jrue Holiday back into the point guard position.
