The Peng Shuai saga took another turn, with the women's tennis player speaking to a Singaporean Chinese-language newspaper about her situation. In a video released by the newspaper, Lianhe Zaobao, Peng denied saying she was sexually assaulted, even despite a November social media post that accused a former top Communist Party official of forcing her into sex.

Here's the Peng Shuai video, apparently taken in Shanghai:

The newspaper said the interview was done at a promotional event for the Beijing Winter Olympics.

ESPN also transcribed the video:

ā€œFirst of all, I want to emphasize something that is very important. I have never said that I wrote that anyone sexually assaulted me. I need to emphasize this point very clearly,ā€ Peng told the newspaper's reporter.

Peng Shuai's initial allegation againstĀ former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli appeared on her verified Webio account on Nov. 2 but was quickly removed. She was then nowhere to be found, which sparked widespread concern for her safety. A supposed public appearance in Beijing and a statement attributed to her in which she retracted the accusation drew plenty of skepticism.

The Women's Tennis Association decided to suspend all events in China indefinitely over this Peng Shuai situation, and the organization remains skeptical about what's truly going on even after this video. Given the nature of this new video, it's only fair to still have plenty of questions about what's going on, even though she insists everything is fine and that she supposedly spends most of her time at home in Beijing with the ability to come and go as she pleases.
